Grocery store coupons

I have two rules which I live by when it comes to using grocery store coupons:

  1. Just because you have a coupon doesn't mean you should buy the item.
  2. Check the price of store brand items before using the coupon.

Grocery Coupon Rule 1:
Just because you have a grocery store coupon, doesn't mean you have to buy the item. If you won't use it, don't buy it! A lot of people end up spending more with coupons because they wouldn't have actually purchased the item if they did not have the coupon. Do not get sucked into this coupon trap. Do not use couopons for items you do not use or need! There are, however, two exceptions to this rule:

  1. If the item is so cheap and you want to try it

    or

  2. If using the coupon makes the item free. I always 'buy' free items. If I don't plan on using the free item, it would most likely make a great donation to a local food bank. I also give items to my next door neighbor and she does the same since there are free groceries that I get that she will use and vice versa. Later, I get into the numerous ways that you can get free groceries.
